The winners of the 2021 AILA NSW Landscape Architecture Awards have been announced, with 32 awards revealed across the program’s 16 categories.
Westmead Hospital Redevelopment by Tract Consultants received an Award of Excellence in the Health and Education Landscape category, with the jury lauding the project for its integration of landscape with the architecture and surrounding urban fabric. Other Awards of Excellence went to Aspect Studios with Grimshaw and the City of Sydney for the the NSW CBD and South East Light Rail project which the jury noted for its “ingenious integration of services, track and safety requirements,” holistic multidisciplinary thinking and people-focused design.
Arcadia Landscape Architecture took out the Award of Excellence in the Play Spaces category for its adaptive reuse of an original sales ring to create a suspended climbing and play structure that references the area’s rich cultural heritage. “The playground demonstrates how effective play spaces can provide long-term positive economic benefit to a broader community and act as a village heart in an urban setting,” the jury citation said.
Jury chair Joshua French said the 2021 awards furthered conversations around the critical role that public space can play in achieving positive economic, social and health outcomes. “The consideration of green space needs to be up there on the same level as hospitals, roads and public transport in terms of what we expect it to deliver for our communities,” he said.
This year’s AILA NSW Landscape Architecture Awards jury comprised Joshua French (jury chair), Annacaterina Piras, Andrew Turnbull, Shahreen Alford, Belinda Graham, James Grant and Joshua Brown.
