Winners announced: 2023 SA Landscape Architecture Awards

The South Australian Landscape Architecture Awards were announced on Friday 30 June, with 28 winners celebrated for their ability to prepare for and respond to climate change.

“Through meaningful collaboration and strategic thinking, landscape architects can help communities adapt and plan for change, and even thrive,” said AILA SA jury chair Carina Green. “Understanding the drivers of change, and preparing for them, will create resilient communities.”

The Award of Excellence in the Parks and Open Space category was won by Kensington Wama/Kensington Gardens Reserve, which also took out the Water for Life Award and a Healthy Parks Healthy People Award. The project, by Aspect Studios, Southfront and City of Burnside, transforms an artificial lake into a naturalized constructed wetland that the jury says has “made new and meaningful spaces for all parts of the community.”

An important part of South Australian history, the Granite Island Causeway won an Award of Excellence for Cultural Heritage and a Regional Achievement Award. Designed by Tract in collaboration with Cox, the project involved significant engagement of First Nations, and reveals the site’s natural history.

The Award of Excellence in the Land Management category was won by the South Parklands Wetland, which also won a Healthy Parks Healthy People SA Award. The project by TCL “demonstrates expert planning, engineering and design, transforming over three hectares of a previously underutilized and degraded part of Adelaide’s nationally significant Park Lands,” said the jury.

The Thorndon Park Playground by JPE Design Studio won the Award of Excellence in the Play Spaces category, as well as a ShadeSmart Award. A one-of-a-kind playspace inspired by the birdlife of the park, it is framed as a place for children and adults to explore together.

The jury for the 2023 awards comprised Carina Green (jury chair), Jo Russel Clarke (guest jury chair), Tim Conybeare, Stephanie Rogers, Travis Wright, Sam Godakumbura, Corey Turner, Josephine Evans and Amy Pfeiffer (guest jury member).

All winners at the State Awards level proceed to the National Landscape Architecture Awards held later this year.
