Winners announced: 2023 WA Landscape Architecture Awards

Five Awards of Excellence were revealed at the 2023 WA Landscape Architecture Awards on 23 June, with regional projects netting several prizes.

MudMap Studio’s Guwarri and Jiljirrgun/Broome Town Beach project received the top AILA WA Medal, the Cultural Heritage Award of Excellence and a Regional Achievement Award.

Hassell was honoured with an Award of Excellence in the Civic Landscape category and a Regional Achievement Award for its once-in-a-generation rejuvenation of the Margaret River Main Street.

Playce’s Koolambidi Woola, a youth precinct in Bunbury where people of all ages can enjoy bespoke play, won a Regional Achievement Award and an Award of Excellence in the Parks and Open Space category.

Jury chair Terry Thompson said the celebrated projects highlighted respect for cultural heritage and showcased the benefits of engaging landscape architects.

“This includes a ‘learning through landscape’ approach, where landscape architects have designed places that are fun, entertaining, restful, have environmental and education values and, quite simply, help people be engaged and happy,” said Thompson.

The jury for the 2023 awards program comprised Katy Svalbe, Caine Holdsworth, Melinda Payne, Elisha Jacobs-Smith, Emma Carr, Anthony Brookfield (urban design only) and chair Terry Thompson.

All winners at the State Awards level proceed to the National Landscape Architecture Awards later this year.
