2021 AILA VIC Landscape Architecture Awards announced

The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) has announced the winners of the 2021 VIC Landscape Architecture Awards.

This year twenty-two awards were revealed across 15 categories, from a total of 71 entries.

Among the projects receiving Awards of Excellence was a garden on Mornington Peninsula that drew from coastal ecologies by Robyn Barlow Design, the revitalization of a pedestrian mall in Melbourne’s outer suburbs by Site Office and City of Frankston, and a collection of water-related projects that reintegrate human and non-human ecologies by Realmstudios with Alluvium Consulting and E2DesignLab.

AILA VIC Landscape Architecture Awards jury chair Naomi Barun said this year’s awarded projects pushed the boundaries of landscape architecture practice and showed a commitment to creating high quality places that supported public life.

“The past year has seen changes in the way public places are valued, with the rediscovery and enabling of new forms of connection and expression. These places became the backdrop for social exchange, exercise and mental reprieve,” said Barun.

“The demand for locally accessible outdoor areas saw privately managed open space repositioned. Private landscapes were used as venues for organised gatherings and work meetings and communities relied on public spaces for economic recovery of our cities.

“Submissions were centred around Victoria’s need to connect, play, roam, to give back to the community and to proactively adapt for the unforeseen.”

This year’s AILA VIC Landscape Architecture Awards jury comprised Heath Gledhill (jury chair), Naomi Barun, Jerry De Gryse, Sarah Lynn Rees, Blake Farmar-Bowers, Skye Haldane, Liz Herbert, Mark Skiba and Esther Ziebell.
