National planning awards celebrate great ideas

The 2019 National Awards for Planning Excellence, presented by the Planning Institute of Australia at a ceremony on the Gold Coast on 15 May 2019, awarded people and projects from around Australia for outstanding achievements in planning.

Two of the award categories celebrate great ideas. The Best Planning Ideas – Small Project Award recognizes outstanding planning ideas for a project that is limited to a site or local place/neighbourhood, the Best Planning Ideas – Large Project Award recognizes outstanding planning ideas for a large project that has town or city, regional, state-wide, national or cross-jurisdiction benefit.

Best Planning Ideas – Small Project

Award: Harris Transportable Housing Project (VIC)
Project team: Hansen Partnership, Launch Housing, Schored Projects, Vicroads

Jury comment: The judges praised the project for its innovative approach, originality, transferability and engagement, as well as its strong commitment and crosscollaboration across government and private enterprise.

Commendation: Future Street (NSW)
Project team: Place Design Group, AILA, Smart Cities Council Australia/New Zealand

Best Planning Ideas – Large Project

Award: Scarborough Foreshore Redevelopment (WA)
Project team: Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority

Jury comment: The judges lauded the project for creating greater visual and physical connetions to the water and unlocking the full social, economic and environmental potential of the foreshore, with benefits for the suburb of Scarborough and the greater city.

Commendation: Oxley Creek Transformation Master Plan (QLD)
Project team: Lat27, Oxley Creek Transformation Pty Ltd, Jacobs, Deloitte, Designflow, Hydrobiology, University of Queensland Cultural Heritage Unit
