2022 National Landscape Architecture Awards: Regional Achievement Award

Grampians Peaks Trail (Gariwerd) by McGregor Coxall with Noxon Giffen

The sensitive and sublime ecologies of Gariwerd have been reverentially complemented by the landscape-led design of the Grampians Peaks Trail. Traversing the lands of three Traditional Custodians, the landscape architecture expertly considers the environmental and cultural uniqueness of each of the 11 hiker campsites. The deft placement, restrained and rhythmic detailing and subtle materiality of the camp amenities, structures and furniture carefully curate the visitors’ experience for optimal balance of immersion in the wilderness and appropriate comfort. Extending the influence of the eco-tourism industry of the region, the project provides beautiful infrastructure for a world-class hiking experience while encouraging respectful and meaningful interaction with this iconic environment.

The Grampians Peak Trail (Gariwerd) is located in Grampians National Park, Victoria on the land of the Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia, Jupagulk, Eastern Maar and Gunditjmara peoples.
