2022 National Landscape Architecture Awards: Landscape Architecture Award for Parks and Open Space

The Spit Redevelopment by Place Design Group

The Spit, on the Broadwater at Queensland’s Gold Coast, is a strong example of positive open space design within the context of foreshore infrastructure. The striking use of hard materials, the simplicity of design elements and the subtle use of colour bring a contemporary layer of thinking to an otherwise functional piece of engineering. The jury felt that the design insertions worked well within the coastal context and showed restraint in material choice to avoid overpowering the stunning landscape, while still providing clear accessibility and a variety of public viewing spaces.

The Spit Redevelopment is located in Main Beach, Queensland on the land of the Yugambeh people.
