2022 National Landscape Architecture Awards: Landscape Architecture Award for Gardens

Fitzroy Bridge House by Robyn Barlow Design

The delightful courtyards and roof garden of Fitzroy Bridge House conscientiously address the small, constrained spaces of this inner-city terrace dwelling with a view toward wider environmental benefits. Beautiful and multifunctional garden rooms have been artfully shaped and detailed for a result that is both playful and sophisticated. The jury found the sunken pond particularly successful, with its alluring use of depth and consistent application of bluestone merging the inside with the out and inspiring interaction with the water and plants. The clever and textural selection of plants also promotes biodiversity, exemplifying how gardens can enrich people’s lives while giving back to neighbourhood ecosystems.

Fitzroy Bridge House is located in Fitzroy, Victoria on the land of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people.
