2022 National Landscape Architecture Awards: Award of Excellence for Urban Design

Cockatoo Island/Wareamah Concept Vision by Turf Design Studio

The jury was impressed with the comprehensive vision for this important island in Sydney Harbour. Once a convict prison, school and naval shipbuilding yard, the site is being re-envisioned as a major public gathering place. The jury appreciated the understanding of history, both colonial and precolonial, and the infused cultural dimensions displayed by the work. The clear graphics and rich programmatic layout help to inform the public in reimagining the island as a series of unique and colourful spaces. The site holds a significant geographic position at the mouth of the Parramatta and Lane Cove rivers, intersecting with multiple First Nations. To manage time constraints, an iterative design process was adopted, allowing for the generation of illustrated perspectives to convey possible future scenarios through a public process. These richly textured and compressed programmatic spaces embody a rich range of conceptual ideas that were all developed early in a process that supported the broader community interest.

Cockatoo Island/Wareamah Concept Vision is located in Sydney Harbour, New South Wales on the land of the Eora people.
