2022 National Landscape Architecture Awards: Award of Excellence for Research, Policy and Communications

Southern Resilience by University of Technology Sydney and University of Newcastle

Congratulations to the Southern Resilience team for its evocative research project, which culminated in audiovisual displays at the Venice Biennale. The scale of thinking and level of detail brought to bear within this project are admirable, and the highly skilled way in which research, policy and communications have been intertwined is commendable. The jury was enthralled by the inventive use of video to help present complex information in a highly accessible way – and believes that this showcases, on the international stage, how diverse design and storytelling techniques can come together in a powerful way.

Southern Resilience is located in Sydney White Bay Power Station; Delprat Garden, Newcastle; Rosedale and Culpra, all in New South Wales; and in Kuku, Horowhenua, North Island in Aotearoa. The designers acknowledge the Yuin, Barkindji, Gadigal, and Awabakal people in New South Wales, and the Ngati Tukorehe in Aotearoa as the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which the project has been undertaken.
