Winners announced: Queensland Landscape Architecture Awards

Six projects have been celebrated with Awards of Excellence and nine more with Landscape Architecture Awards at the 2023 Queensland Landscape Architecture Awards.

Tract took out the Award of Excellence in the Parks and Open Spaces category as well as the Land Management category with Hanlon Park / Bur’uda Waterway Rejuvenation. The project transforms an underutilized space with a concrete-lined channel into a naturalised creek in inner-city Brisbane. The jury lauded the project for its “exceptional concept of natural play” that has been “expertly integrated into the local environment and community.” The jury commented that the project demonstrated a “climate-positive approach to both process and outcomes that emphasises climate mitigation and adaptation.”

Other projects acknowleged in the program include Hinterland Adventure Playground in Cooroy by Urbis which took out the top honour in the Play Spaces category and University of Queensland Reconciliation Garden by Arcadia. “The [reconciliation] garden respectfully balances the colonial heritage and Indigenous knowledge for the physical, mental and cultural well-being of both site users and the Country,” the jury stated. Across the state awards program, a total of 6 Awards of Excellence and 9 Landscape Architecture Awards were given out.

The jury for the 2023 awards program comprised Mimi Tsai (chair), Candy Rosmarin, Erin McDonald, Matthew Moore, Marina Couchman, Tim Connor and Yan Chen.

All recipients of Awards of Excellence and Landscape Architecture Awards will progress to the 2023 National Landscape Architecture Awards to be announced in late October at the upcoming 2023 Festival of Landscape Architecture, themed “Un/Earth.”
