IFLA recognizes Dutch landscape architect with 2022 Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award

The International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) has announced Dutch landscape architect Adriaan Geuze the winner of the 2022 Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award.

Geuze is the founder and director of international office for landscape architecture and urban design West 8, founded in Rotterdam in 1987. The studio specializes in large-scale urban master planning and design, landscape interventions, waterfront projects, parks, squares and gardens with projects undertaken in over 60 countries.

The practice’s well-known projects include the design of Schouwburgplein, a contemporary urban square and “city stage” for the residents of Rotterdam; Chiswick Business Park which created a public garden inside a large office development near the centre of London; and the proposal for Governors Island which reimagines an abandoned island in New York Harbor.

The jury celebrated Geuze as “one of the most significant landscape architects in the world today,” lauding his extensive contributions to teaching and practice. “Geuze represents the best values of the IFLA world community,” stated the jury. “His outstanding contributions to the promotion of the profession in conceptual and practical terms as well as his trajectory and extensive work covering different scales and typologies have inspired countless students, teachers, and practitioners worldwide.”

The annual Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award celebrates a living landscape architect whose “achievements and contributions have had a unique and lasting impact on the welfare of society and the environment and on the promotion of the profession of landscape architecture,” and is IFLA’s highest honour.

The award is named after notable British landscape architect Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe, a founding president of the organization. Previous winners of the award include Iraqi landscape architect Jala Makhzoumi in 2021, American landscape architects Kathryn Gustafson and Anne Whiston Spirn in 2019 and 2018 respectively, Dutch landscape architect and planner Dirk Sijmons in 2017, and German practitioner Peter Latz in 2016.
