2020 National Landscape Architecture Awards: Landscape Architecture Award for Play Spaces

Paperbark Playspace by Phillips Marler, Parramatta Park Trust and Western Sydney Parklands Trust

Jury citation:

Paperbark Playspace is a beautiful playground that resolves a complex set of technical site constraints with considerable skill. Sited within Parramatta Park, the ground beneath the play space contains significant Aboriginal and European archaeological potential, making excavation and placement of sub-surface footings impossible. The solution was a raised no-dig platform, which satisfies the heritage requirements, resolves access and presents an engaging, elegant and playful structure that sits lightly in the wooded landscape. Paperbark Playspace is a sensitive and popular addition to the greater park that encourages children of all ages to engage through play with the layered historical stories of the place.

Location: Parramatta (NSW)

Aboriginal Nation: Dharug
