2020 Australian Urban Design Awards: Winner of Leadership, Advocacy and Research – Local and Neighbourhood Scale

Transforming Southbank Boulevard (VIC) by City of Melbourne, City Design Studio

Jury citation

Sometimes a project is so simple and obvious that you wonder why it doesn’t happen more often – transforming Southbank Boulevard is one of these. A wide multi-lane road in Melbourne’s city centre has been turned into a two-lane street flanked by a linear park and a tree-lined walkway and cycle path. The project was catalyzed by traffic management changes, but could equally be understood as an alternative transport option or simply as a recognition that the total movement of people down this busy city road can be matched or even exceeded by thinking differently about the transport modes along it. This project is not only an improvement to city liveability and street space, but also a reminder to keep pushing for change and thinking differently about the uses of our land. This can only come about through different professions and organisations working together toward a common goal.
