2020 Australian Urban Design Awards: Commendation for Leadership, Advocacy and Research – City and Regional Scale

Wianamatta: South Creek Urban Typologies and Stormwater Management (NSW) by Bligh Tanner, Architectus and Sydney Water

Jury citation

The aspirations for a cool and green Parkland City for Western Sydney call for a massive change to current planning and design practice. Sydney Water has taken an active role in developing a strategic approach for integrated water-cycle planning for Western Sydney. The Wianamatta: South Creek Urban Typologies and Stormwater Management project presents a sustainable and sensitive solution to the contemporary challenges of climate change, drought and population pressures.

One million people and 500,000 additional local workers are expected to call Western Sydney home in the coming decades, along Wianamatta Creek, which flows into the Hawkesbury-Nepean river system. The urban typologies create a sustainable approach to greenfield urbanization, with a focus on the water cycle, greenery, amenity, walkability and access to shared community space. These typologies demonstrate best practice in responding to the need for cities to plan for increasingly hot summers, while achieving high quality urban density.
