For many years Western Sydney was seen by some as the periphery of Sydney’s metropolitan edge, a vast plain for accommodating the needs of the harbour city. In recent years however, Sydney has come to be understood as the whole basin, created by a ripple in the Great Dividing Range, the Pacific Ocean and the great water courses of the Hawkesbury, Nepean and Georges rivers. Western Sydney has become the “Parkland City,” in balance with the “Eastern Harbour City” and the “Central River City.” It has begun to develop its own character that reflects the area’s unique topography, vegetation, watercourses, climate and heritage.
Sydney Science Park is a part of this emerging Western Parkland City and its built form has been designed to respond to the Australian landscape, as a piece of a new modern city that supports walking, cycling, a connection to nature and a close interplay between work and home. The project weaves green infrastructure into living and working, providing shade, a healthy environment, recreation, a new liveable conurbation and an exemplary piece of urban design process and practice.
