2020 Australian Urban Design Awards: Commendation for Built Projects – Local and Neighbourhood Scale

The Rocks Laneway (WA) by Taylor Robinson Chaney Broderick with UDLA

Jury citation

The Rocks Laneway is about achieving a lot with a little. The project connects the city to the sea, the site’s future to its past and people to each other. The laneway is a city-to-foreshore pathway that incorporates laneways, streets and the original “Rocks” store, adapted to accommodate a new pedestrian lane and event space adjacent to the waterfront. By retaining existing features, and adding historical interpretation and creative expression, the design sets a new precedent for regional infrastructure and urban renewal investment. This project is bold, engaging, incisive, inclusive and has been delivered in an incredibly simple and robust way.
