2020 Australian Urban Design Awards: Commendation for Built Projects – City and Regional Scale

CBD and South East Light Rail (NSW) by Grimshaw and Aspect Studios in collaboration with the City of Sydney on behalf of Transport for NSW supported by Randwick City Council

Jury citation

The Sydney Light Rail project has succeeded in three significant ways. It has transformed the Sydney CBD and George Street; provided a new and much-needed mass transport option between the CBD, the south east of Sydney, the city’s sports stadiums and UNSW Sydney; and created opportunities for transit-orientated development in the south of the corridor. It has achieved these outcomes in a challenging and constrained physical and political environment with sensitivity to context, design quality and through a collaborative and multidisciplinary design process.

The integration and design of the stations, the landscape, paths, stabling yards, open space, power supplies, bridges and tunnels have all been considered carefully, with stakeholder input, to contribute to the city and its built fabric.
