The New South Wales government has launched a design competition for a new foreshore park at Central Barangaroo.
The 1.85-hectare park will be located between Nawi Cove and the Crown Casino tower along the Wulugul Walk.
The government’s vision for the Harbour Park has six objectives: to achieve world class design excellence; to acknowledge and respect the Aboriginal connections of the site; to deliver an enduring framework of use for the park; to maximize flexible and equitable use of public space; to create a place that welcomes all; and to integrate the Harbour Park into the “constellation of public open spaces that define Sydney and its harbour”.
“In our modern world of city landscapes of redeveloped and ever-changing private spaces, the key component that remains at the heart of the city’s function and beauty is the importance of our public spaces,” said former prime minister Paul Keating, who will chair the jury for the design competition.
Eligible teams must include a registered landscape architect and a nominated lead designer, who must have had a business in Australia for a minimum of 10 years.
The jury also comprises Australian landscape architect Oi Choong (former director of Context Landscape Architecture), Jefa Greenaway (founding director of Greenaway Architects), Ivan Harbour (founding partner of RSHP), and Catherine Mosbach (founder of Mosbach Paysagistes).
Registrations open 5 December and expression of interest close 16 February 2023. Shortlisted teams will be announced on 20 March 2023 and a winner will be announced in mid-2023. To register, head to the Barangaroo Harbour Park website.
