A mid-rise office building planned for Alexandria in Sydney will feature a stack of meeting rooms in the form of a “tree house” looking out over a central courtyard.
With detailed design by John Wardle Architects, the mixed-use development at the corner of Bourke Road and Bowden Street will feature food and drink premises, shops, bicycle parking and office space on the ground level, with the next three levels given over to office space.
John Wardle Architects won a competitive design competition for project together with Speculative Architecture in 2020, beating out rival schemes by 3XN Architects and BVN respectively. The jury were impressed by the permeability and connectivity of the ground plane, the distinct rooftop terrace and the integration of the internal green courtyard.

The landscape design for the project is by Openwork and Christina Silk Office of Planting. They describe the central courtyard as an “immersive garden of seating nooks nested amongst textural feature planting and large deciduous tree canopies.”
In one corner of the courtyard, the distinctive tree house structure will contain a series of meeting rooms that project out into the courtyard void, “where users are surrounded by the green balcony planting and can observe the courtyard below.”
The development would also involve perimeter landscaping along Bourke Road and Bowden Street, an internal level one landscaped terrace, break-out landscape terraces and a landscaped terrace and roof top garden at level four.
A development application for the $82 million project has been lodged with the City of Sydney.
