2024 Australian Urban Design Awards: Commendation in Built Projects – City and Regional Scale

Walyalup Civic Centre by KHA

Jury comment

The Walyalup Civic Centre uses its strategic triangular form to weave lost urban geometries, heritage elements, new public spaces, and facilities into re-energised civic relationships. The focus of the precinct is the Lawn – a protected, north-facing tilted plane that is tucked beneath the centre’s veiled enclosure that elevates audiences for events and concerts staged in the foreground of St John’s Church. Highly specific urban readings guided the placement of key laneways, balconies and apertures that link the Civic Centre to its city. The sophistication of the project’s response to place is heightened¬ by the consideration and equality it gives to both historic and contemporary city layers.

Walyalup Civic Centre is located in Walyalup/Fremantle on the land of the Whadjuk people of the Nyoongar nation.
