Winners announced: 2020 WA Landscape Architecture Awards

The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) has announced the winners of the 2020 WA Landscape Architecture Awards. Of note among the winners was Liyan-ngan Nyirrwa (Cultural Wellbeing Centre) by Nyamba Buru Yawuru and MudMap Studio which took out the Award of Excellence in the Health and Education Landscape category, a Regional Award, as well as the WA Medal.

The jury in their report stated that the projects entered into this year’s program demonstrated how the work of landscape architects plays a fundamental role in shaping how urban and regional public spaces can contribute to physical and mental health.

The jury noted that “a notable element across all projects was the position landscape architects held within the project team, often as project leads.”

“This shift illustrates the professions long held belief that landscape architects are effective at designing more than just the ‘space in between,’ [and that they can] lead complex multidisciplinary design projects from community consultation through to construction and … achieve great outcomes [by looking] beyond project boundaries.”

“The beautiful work observed in [this year’s] submissions is attributed to strong connections made with clients and community to absolutely understand the needs of the brief, and then deliver with intent.”
