National planning awards celebrate exemplary places

The 2019 National Awards for Planning Excellence, presented by the Planning Institute of Australia at a ceremony on the Gold Coast on 15 May 2019, awarded people and projects from around Australia for outstanding achievements in planning.

Two of the award categories celebrate exemplary places. The From Plan to Place Award recognizes the implementation of a plan into a successful place, while the Great Place Award recognizes a great place, street or neighbourhood in Australia.

From Plan to Place

Award: Optus Stadium (WA)
Project team: Hassell, Cox, HKS, Multiplex

Jury comment: The judges commented on the project’s skilful resolution of the site’s major constraints, the integration of the state’s indigenous culture into the design, and the project’s promotion of a healthy lifestyle for future generations.

Great Place

Award: Yagan Square (WA)
Project Team: Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority

Jury comment: The judges commented on the project’s social inclusiveness, its recognition of the area’s rich Aboriginal heritage and its role in promoting reconciliation.

Commendation: Barangaroo South (NSW)
Project Team: Aspect Oculus, Lendlease, Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners
