Kevin O’Brien (Australia)

Kevin O’Brien is a principal at BVN, professor of Creative Practice at the School of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney, and a board member of La Boite Theatre in Brisbane.

Since 2005, Kevin has led the Finding Country project that acts as a guide for practice, teaching and thinking about landscape and architecture. Its larger ambition is the pursuit of a sense of belonging. In 2012 this endeavour took the form of the Finding Country exhibition as an independent and official collateral event of the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale. The main drawing exhibited street maps of Brisbane emptied by 50 per cent to reveal arguments for a tension between Country and city. The exhibition received international attention and was awarded the 2013 Karl Langer Award for Urban Design from the Queensland Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA).
