A design team has been awarded the contract for the City of Melbourne’s ambitious Greenline Project along the Yarra River.
Councillors have unanimously endorsed the appointment of a multidisciplinary design consortium led by TCL and Aspect Studios to design five interconnected precincts making up the new riverside masterplan.
The Aspect Studios x TCL team incorporates architects Jackson Clements Burrows (JCB) Architecture and BKK Architects, as well as urban planners Urbis and Gehl, enginering firms WSPand FSC, and Capire Consulting Group.
“The design process will be based on the principles of woven collaboration,” a spokesperson for BKK said. “Our Greenline partnerships will be based on open dialogue and shared insights, producing often-surprising and inspiring outcomes.”
The design practices will work closely with council, the state government, and key stakeholders to generate a shared project vision.
The project will transform four kilometres along the north bank of the Yarra River into a promenade of parks, open spaces, cultural activations and renewed landscape between Birrarung Marr and the Bolte Bridge.

The five interconnected precincts will include Birrarung Marr, The Falls, River Mark, Maritime, and Saltwater Wharf, each celebrating the area’s Indigenous history.
“The Greenline Project is a transformative vision for our city and we’re thrilled to have two of Australia’s leading landscape architecture firms on board to help us make this vision a reality,” said said lord mayor Sally Capp.
In its 2022-2023 budget released in September, the City of Melbourne released a business case for the Greenline Project, anticipating it will deliver $3 return for every dollar invested.
Works are expected to commence in 2023.
