The winners of the 2020 Australian Urban Design Awards were announced at an online presentation on Thursday 15 October. The awards recognize contemporary Australian urban design of the highest quality and aim to encourage innovation in the built environment across cities, towns and communities.
Five projects received awards with seven receiving commendations from this years entries. The Metro North West project by Hassell in collaboration with Turpin Crawford Studio and McGregor Westlake Architecture took out the top honour in the Built projects – city and regional scale category, with Darling Square by Aspect Studios with Kengo Kuma and Associates winning the Built projects – local and neighbourhood scale section.
Within the Leadership, advocacy and research – city and regional scale category, Fitzgerald Frisby Landscape Architecture’s Eastern Regional Trails Strategy took out the top accolade, with the judges describing the project as “an exemplar of cooperation and coordination.”
Chief executive officer at City Renewal Authority (ACT) and jury chair Malcolm Snow said he was pleased to see “the integration of green infrastructure, climate change awareness and the importance of public space, together with creative collaboration between professions and the infusion of First Nations’ culture featuring prominently in this year’s entries”.
The annual awards program is co-convened by the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA), the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA).
