‘Sensitive, considered and ambitious’: 2021 National Landscape Architecture Awards

The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) has revealed the winners of the 2021 National Landscape Architecture Awards with 47 projects recognized across the program’s 17 categories.

AILA President Claire Martin said the pandemic had shed light on the vulnerabilities of our cities and the need for public spaces that addressed fundamental social, environmental, and economic change.

“This year’s diverse award entrants demonstrate the leading role that landscape architects play in delivering innovative responses to complex issues and making positive contributions to our regions and cities,” Martin said.

“Despite all the challenges the pandemic delivered, it has presented a great opportunity for the industry to re-evaluate how we use these spaces.

“The variety of submissions illustrates the passion and drive of our AILA members to influence the way we work, live and play. “These projects set new benchmarks as we continue to build knowledge as a profession.”

Awards jury chair Peta-Maree Ashford noted that many winning projects focused on community involvement and the use of local spaces.

“COVID, for the first time to such an extent, has encouraged communities to make the most of their own backyard, whether that be their physical home, local park or community garden,” Ashford said.

“Growing use of these spaces means there is undoubtably a need for thoughtfully landscaped, high-quality spaces that locals are genuinely excited to use.

“Green spaces add this irrefutable value in strengthening community connectedness and maintaining mental and physical wellbeing.”

Among the projects receiving Awards of Excellence in this year’s program were two projects by Hassell, both located in Brisbane. Riverside Green – South Bank Parklands took out the top award in the Parks and Open Space category, and the Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS) and Public Realm, Herston Quarter received a gong in the Health and Education Landscape section. The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions was also the recipient of Awards of Excellence for Western Australian projects Ngajarli, Kaju Yatka (Kalbarri Skywalk) and Lalang-gaddam Marine Park Visitor Plan.
