2021 Australian Urban Design Awards: Winner of Leadership, Advocacy and Research – City and Regional Scale

Darwin Civic and State Square by TCL with Troppo

Jury comment

Darwin Civic and State Square provides a compelling vision for a new cultural and civic core that reimagines existing car parking into a dynamic new heart for public life in the city. Its careful consideration of stakeholder feedback throughout the urban design process has resulted in an inclusive design that not only reflects the city’s contemporary identity but draws on and celebrates Larrakia First Nations and migrant cultures.

The project demonstrates a thorough understanding of social, economic and environmental drivers, alongside a thoughtful analysis of context and best-practice public space. The result is a masterplan of national significance for its qualities of local responsiveness, cultural inclusivity and deep groundedness in the spirit of place.

The jury commends TCL with Troppo, and the governments of the Northern Territory and the City of Darwin, for their commitment to this bold vision, which promises to both frame and catalyse the future revitalization of Darwin’s heart.

Darwin Civic and State Square is located in Darwin, Norther Territory, on the land of the Larrikia people.
