2021 Australian Urban Design Awards: Commendation for Leadership, Advocacy and Research – City and Regional Scale

LXRP Indigenous Design Guidelines by Level Crossing Removal Project

Jury comment

This innovative document, which builds on the International Indigenous Design Charter, sets out a methodology for engaging with First Nations communities and a framework for achieving an integrated response to designing with Country. Prepared in partnership with Aboriginal people, the Indigenous Design Guidelines (IDG) recognize that Aboriginal culture and knowledge exist, that they continue to evolve, and that meaningful engagement and deliberate practice are required to ensure that these values are represented in the postcolonial city.

The jury commends the LXRP team for their leadership in championing the development and implementation of the IDG. Their application, which advances the urban design process by promoting collaboration with Traditional Owners, will make a significant impact on the cultural inclusivity of LXRP projects throughout metropolitan Melbourne. The IDG are also an important contribution to progressing national discourse on best-practice approaches to large-scale urban infrastructure projects that meaningfully acknowledge, elevate and celebrate Aboriginal culture through Indigenous design.

LXRP Indigenous Design Guidelines applies to the land in Victoria, the land of the Kulin people.
