2021 Australian Urban Design Awards: Commendation for Built Projects – City and Regional Scale

Campbell Section 5 by Hill Thalis Architecture and Urban Projects in collaboration with Jane Irwin Landscape Architecture and Cardno, for the former ACT Land Development Agency (SLA)

Jury comment

Urban design is about the long-term planning, development and fruition of ideas as well as challenging the status quo and improving the quality of our built environment.

Campbell Section 5 successfully continues the retranslation of the Griffins’ masterplanning of Canberra, more than a century ago. It also creates a modern mix of medium-density dwellings, parks, civilized streets and substantial tree cover in a well-mannered and sensitive integration with the city fabric.

The project’s design exemplifies the placemaking qualities that were vital in our pandemic existence and is a model for a more sustainable future. Its mix of private and public space creates local value for the people who live there and nearby, skilfully overcoming the usual highrise challenges and economic pressure to produce a balanced, delightful place.

Campbell Section 5 is located in Campbell, Australian Capital Territory, on the land of the Ngunnawal people.
