2018 National Landscape Architecture Awards: Landscape Architecture Award for Civic Landscape

Palmwoods New Town Square by Sunshine Coast Council

Jury citation:

This project clearly demonstrates sustainable outcomes related to the social and economic capacity of the community. Design leadership has ensured that a remarkable 96 percent of the local community approves of the plan’s core aspirations. The project shows sensitivity to human scale and climatic conditions in the use of the area’s emblematic piccabeen palms, and cleverly negotiates topography while prioritizing pedestrian circulation. It embraces heritage built form with a contemporary design that showcases a shared vision for the region. The square is part of an investment in the region as the town shifts from agricultural to “tree change” lifestyle economies. It has given the community a central meeting point for festivals and a new sense of pride in their town.
