Keynote speaker – Landscape Australia Conference 2017
Raised in Wales, Ralph Johns studied and practised as a landscape architect in the UK prior to moving to New Zealand in 2001 to establish the landscape architecture degree program at Victoria University. As an academic Ralph was heavily involved in setting the direction for a new design-focused, urban-based landscape program, and combined teaching and research with private practice.
For the past decade he has been a senior member of design practice Isthmus. As CEO he divides his time between studios in Auckland and Wellington and between strategy, practice management and project work. Isthmus is a multidisciplinary studio interested in the advancement of land, people and culture. In recent years Isthmus has focused on integrating architecture into the studios to create a rich, multi-layered design practice.
Ralph has won a number of awards for his work and has contributed articles to local and international design publications. He was the driving force behind the book Coast. Country. Neighbourhood. City, edited by Michael Barrett, which explores Isthmus’s design philosophy and the story behind twenty-five of the practice’s projects.
