A policy that increases development opportunities in Cairns while preserving the city’s identity as a “city in a rainforest” has taken out the top award at the Planning Institute of Australia’s (PIA) 2016 Queensland Awards for Planning Excellence.
“The study represents a significant contribution of tropical expertise that can be offered, transferred and adapted to suit the needs of other tropical cities. Cairns is defining itself as a leader worldwide in the area of tropical urbanism,” said PIA Queensland state president Todd Rohl.
In total, 13 entries across 15 categories were awarded at the 2016 Queensland Awards for Planning Excellence.
“We’ve been extremely impressed by the outstanding calibre of entries in this year’s awards, I am proud to say the awards continue to set the standard for planning excellence in Queensland,” Mr Rohl added.
