2012 AILA National Landscape Architecture Award of Excellence: Planning

Bingara and the Living Classroom by John Mongard Landscape Architects

Client: Gwydir Shire Council
Partners: Gwydir Shire Council, Vision 2020

Jury comment

This project engaged the local community to develop strategies to future-proof its town, in a way that could be built by local people for very little cost. A slow evolution of ideas over a five year timeframe played a strong role in educating the community about the future potential for Bingara.

This is a worthy example of the role that landscape architects will increasingly need to play in helping regional Australian towns survive the multiple threats of sea change, ageing, brain drain and climate change that threaten to make Australian country towns a thing of the past.
